Functional Massage
Functional massage may not be a term you have heard of before – because it isn’t an established modality but rather a term that I use to explain what type of massage I perform.
When a client presents to me with an issue, I trace it back to the root and work towards a goal. This is generally a functional goal – be it do squats without pain, be able to run again, or perform at a higher level in any given sport. It can be as simple as being able to turn your head or put on a sweater without difficulty. Whatever issue you are experiencing, we will work together to achieve your goals.
Your Body Is Not Two Dimensional Nor Should Your Massage Be
Any massage can feel great, but if you want results, the muscles must be approached by all dimensions.
Let’s look, for example, at the Quadratus Lumborum muscle. This muscle can cause issues in the low back but if we work ONLY from the back, we will not get the sides or deeper aspects of that muscle. Not to mention that there are different muscles and fascia layered on top. So what is the solution?
A massage does not have to be done in just two positions. Face down and face up. We can try side lying, with the legs extended, arms up. This lengthens the side and allows the therapist to approach the muscle from the side of the low back.
If you’ve had a massage from me, you already know that I will have you move into different positions, turn your head, shrug your shoulders, rotate your hip or any number of movements and positions that will move other muscles out of the way and allow me to penetrate to the deeper muscles.
The deeper muscles cannot be ignored if change is desired. Even more, they must be worked from different and multiple angles to get results.

No Two Massages Are The Same

With over 24 years of experience in sports and injury massage, I have developed a very specific and technical type of massage. My focus with each appointment is to treat the problem. In order to do that, I will assess range of motion and pain then utilize different body positioning, and multiple massage modalities. I track improvements in the quality of motion and pain while working with my clients to give them the most pain relief and benefits as possible.
No two massages are the same. Each time you come in, I will design a custom plan to get you the most benefits. I may utilize deep tissue with sports techniques in specific areas, cups or scraping to increase blood flow and break up fascia, and then utilize a swedish technique for stress relief on the rest of the body. It all depends on your goals and needs for each massage.
